How Long Does Cooked Chicken Last in the Fridge?

You made a big batch of chicken, popped the leftovers in the fridge… and now it’s Day 3.
You’re staring at the container like: “Is this still good?”

Let’s clear it up — here’s how long cooked chicken really lasts in the fridge, how to store it, and how to know when it’s time to toss it.

🕒 The Official Rule

According to the USDA:

Cooked chicken lasts 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator.

That includes:

  • Baked, grilled, roasted chicken

  • Chicken salads

  • Chicken soups and stews

  • Shredded or pulled chicken

✅ Key: It must be refrigerated within 2 hours of cooking.
On a hot day (above 90°F)? Make that 1 hour.

❄️ Best Storage Practices

To make your chicken last as long as possible:

  • Store in shallow, airtight containers

  • Keep your fridge at 40°F or lower

  • Label containers with the date

  • Keep chicken separate from raw meats

And no — wrapping a plate in foil is not enough.

👃 How to Tell If Cooked Chicken Has Gone Bad

Here’s your spoilage checklist:

1. Smell:

If it smells sour, sulfuric, or just “off” — toss it.

2. Texture:

Slimy, sticky, or tacky = not safe.

3. Color:

A slight darkening is normal, but green, gray, or iridescent hues are a no-go.

When in doubt, throw it out. It’s not worth the food poisoning.

❄️ Can You Freeze Cooked Chicken?

Absolutely!

  • Let it cool completely

  • Store in freezer-safe bags or containers

  • Squeeze out extra air

  • Label it (trust me, you won’t remember what it is next month)

Freezer life:

Up to 4 months for best quality.
Technically safe longer, but flavor fades over time.

🍗 Reheating Tips

  • Reheat only what you plan to eat

  • Add a splash of broth or water to avoid drying out

  • Internal temp should reach 165°F again before serving

👨‍🍳 Final Thoughts

Cooked chicken is one of the easiest proteins to meal prep — but don’t play the guessing game.

Stick to 3–4 days refrigerated, and freeze anything you can’t finish in time. Your stomach will thank you.

🔍 FAQ

Can I eat cooked chicken after 5 days?

It’s risky. If it smells fine and looks okay, you might get away with it — but the USDA says 3–4 days max.

What if it was stored in a Ziploc bag?

Still 3–4 days. Ziplocs help, but the clock starts once it's cooked.

What if I left it out overnight?

Unfortunately, no. Even cooked, chicken left out more than 2 hours should be tossed.

📌 Don’t guess. Don’t sniff-test. Know your chicken’s fridge life.
