Pastelon aka Dominican Lasagna

The pastelón is a casserole dish consisting of typical Latin Caribbean foods such as plantains, sofrito, and seasoned, ground beef, (picadillo).

Ingredients
  

  • 9 Yellow plantains
  • 1 Lb of cooked ground beef “Picadillo”
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • 2 cups of shredded Mozzarella cheese
  • Some fresh cilantro

Method
 

  1. Peel your plantains
  2. Boil them with 1 teaspoon of salt for about 35 mins
  3. Once the plantains are cooked, dump the water out
  4. Mash the plantains with the butter
  5. On a baking dish lay out half of your plantains
  6. Add all the cooked ground beef to the first layer of plantains
  7. Add the second layer of plantains on top of the ground beef
  8. Spread the plantains with a spatula as even as you can
  9. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  10. Bake the Pastelon for about 25 mins. Or until all the cheese has melted
  11. Once out of the oven, let it rest for a couple of minutes
  12. Cut into squares, serve and enjoy!

Storage & Meal Prep
Refrigerator: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days.
Freezer: Freeze in a sealed container for up to 2-3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge.
Reheat: Warm in a skillet over medium heat, in the microwave, or in a 350°F oven until heated through.
