Italian Stromboli

Stromboli is a delicious Italian dish similar to a turnover. Filled with a variety of Italian cheeses and cold cuts or vegetables, this dish is a perfect meal for any occasion.

Ingredients
  

  • DOUGH:
  • ¾ cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • teaspoons active or instant dry yeast
  • cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tbs vegetable oil
  • FILLING:
  • ½ cup marinara sauce
  • ½ pound sliced Italian cold cuts or pepperoni
  • 1-1½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • TOPPING:
  • 1 egg beaten

Method
 

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer whisk together water, sugar, and yeast. Add in flour and salt and with a dough hook mix on medium speed just until the dough comes together.
  2. Transfer to a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
  3. Preheat oven to 400. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured countertop and roll it out into a large rectangle.
  4. Spread your marinara sauce over the dough until about 1" away from the edges. Top with cheese, sliced cold cuts, and pepperoni.
  5. Roll up and transfer to a baking sheet, lined with parchment paper. Brush with lightly beaten egg.
  6. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes until golden. Serve hot with extra marinara sauce if desired.

Notes

Storage & Meal Prep
Refrigerator: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days.
Freezer: Freeze in a sealed container for up to 2-3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge.
Reheat: Warm in a skillet over medium heat, in the microwave, or in a 350°F oven until heated through.
