This Air Fryer Blooming Onion is a game changer for busy weeknights. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and ready in a fraction of the time compared to traditional methods. Once you try making this in the air fryer, you'll never go back!

Did You Know?

The blooming onion was invented in 1988 at Outback Steakhouse and requires a special cutting technique that fans the onion petals outward — making this air fryer blooming onion at home delivers the same dramatic presentation and crispy coating with up to 75% less oil than deep frying.

Pro Tips

Preheat the air fryer for 3-5 minutes before cooking for the crispiest results. Shake the basket or flip items halfway through for even browning on all sides.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I cut a blooming onion?

Cut off the top, peel the skin, place root-side up, and make 12-16 evenly spaced cuts from top to about ½ inch from the root. Flip over and gently spread the petals open.

2. What type of onion is best?

A large sweet onion (Vidalia, Walla Walla, or Texas Sweet) works best. Sweet onions have less bite when cooked and become tender and mildly sweet inside the crispy coating.

3. What is the breading process?

Dip the cut onion in seasoned flour, then egg wash, then flour again (double coating). Use a spoon to get the batter deep between every petal for full coverage.

4. What temperature and time in the air fryer?

375 degrees for 20-25 minutes until the coating is deep golden brown and crispy. Spray with cooking oil before and halfway through for the best golden color.

5. How do I get the batter between all the petals?

Hold the onion upside down over the flour and egg wash bowls, letting the coating drip into every crevice. Use a spoon or squeeze bottle to push batter into tight spots.

6. What seasoning goes in the breading?

Paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper mixed into the flour. The seasoned coating is what makes a blooming onion taste like the restaurant version.

7. What dipping sauce is traditional?

A spicy pink dipping sauce made from mayo, ketchup, horseradish, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne. This is the Outback Steakhouse-style sauce that everyone craves.

8. How much oil does an air fryer blooming onion use?

Just a light spray of cooking oil — about 75% less oil than the deep-fried restaurant version. The air fryer creates surprisingly crispy results with minimal fat.

9. Why did my blooming onion fall apart?

The root was cut too deep (you need that ½ inch base intact to hold the petals together) or the onion was sliced too aggressively. Gentle, even cuts are key.

10. Can I make a smaller version?

Yes — use medium onions for individual servings. Cut the same way but make fewer cuts (8-10 instead of 16). They cook in about 15-18 minutes at the same temperature.

Ingredients

  • 1 large sweet onion
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • Cooking spray

  2. Mix flour with paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk eggs with milk. Place panko in a third bowl.
  3. Dredge the onion in seasoned flour, making sure to get between all petals. Dip in egg wash, then coat in panko breadcrumbs. Repeat for extra crunch.
  4. Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the onion cut-side up. Spray the top with cooking spray. Air fry at 375°F for 15-18 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
