This Air Fryer Mummy Dogs Easy Halloween Recipe Idea is a game changer for busy weeknights. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and ready in a fraction of the time compared to traditional methods. Once you try making this in the air fryer, you'll never go back!

Did You Know?

Mummy dogs — hot dogs wrapped in strips of crescent roll dough to resemble Egyptian mummies — became one of the most popular Halloween party foods after Pillsbury began promoting the recipe on their crescent roll packaging. The air fryer version crisps the dough more evenly than the oven, and the strips of dough puff up during cooking to create that unmistakable wrapped-mummy appearance that delights kids every October.

Pro Tips

Preheat the air fryer for 3-5 minutes before cooking for the crispiest results. Shake the basket or flip items halfway through for even browning on all sides. Layer ingredients strategically with cheese next to the bread as a moisture barrier.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are mummy dogs?

Hot dogs wrapped in strips of crescent roll dough to look like mummies, with mustard dots for eyes. They are a fun, easy Halloween snack that kids love making and eating.

2. What dough do I use?

Refrigerated crescent roll dough (like Pillsbury) cut into thin strips works perfectly. Puff pastry strips also work for a flakier, more golden result.

3. How do I wrap the dough to look like mummy bandages?

Cut crescent dough into ¼-inch strips. Wrap the strips around each hot dog in a spiral pattern, leaving a small gap for the mummy face. Do not wrap too tightly or gaps close during baking.

4. What temperature and time in the air fryer?

370 degrees for 8-10 minutes until the dough is golden brown and puffed. Check at 8 minutes — air fryers cook faster than ovens and every model varies.

5. Can I bake these in the oven instead?

Yes — bake at 375 degrees for 12-15 minutes on a parchment-lined sheet pan until golden brown. The oven method handles larger batches more easily than the air fryer.

6. How do I make the mummy eyes?

Use small dots of mustard, ketchup, or candy eyes pressed into the exposed hot dog area before serving. Candy eyes (found in the baking aisle) give the most realistic look.

7. What hot dogs work best?

Standard-sized all-beef hot dogs or cocktail franks for mini mummies. Choose straight hot dogs that do not curve — they are easier to wrap evenly with the dough strips.

8. Can kids help make mummy dogs?

Absolutely — wrapping the dough strips is the perfect task for kids. They love creating each unique mummy. Just have an adult handle the oven or air fryer.

9. What dipping sauces work for a Halloween theme?

Ketchup as blood, green-tinted ranch as slime, or mustard as monster goo. Serve in small bowls with Halloween labels for a fun presentation.

10. Can I prep mummy dogs ahead of a Halloween party?

Wrap them up to 2 hours before baking and refrigerate on a parchment-lined tray. Bake or air fry right before guests arrive for warm, fresh mummy dogs.

Ingredients Method Notes

Ingredients

  • 8 hot dogs
  • 1 package crescent roll dough, 8 ounces
  • 1 package candy eyes
  • 1 tablespoon mustard

Method

  1. Remove all moisture from the hot dogs with paper towels. Set these aside.
  2. Roll out the crescent dough. Use a pizza cutter or knife to slice the dough into ½ inch strips.
  3. Take the strips of dough and wrap them around the hot dogs. Try to criss-cross a little, but do not overlap too many layers or they will not bake properly. Make sure you leave a little space uncovered to add the eyes later.
  4. Spray the basket with plain oil or use parchment paper instead.
  5. Place some of the mummies into the air fryer basket. Make sure they are not too crowded. You will have to bake them in batches. Air Fry the mummies at 325°F for 6 minutes, or until cooked through and golden brown.
  6. If you prefer to make these in the oven, just place all of the mummies onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Make sure they are not too crowded. Bake them for 8-10 minutes at 350 degrees or until golden.
  7. Use a small amount of mustard (or ketchup) to attach the candy eyes.
  8. Enjoy, Happy Halloween!
  9. Halloween Chocolate Cupcakes
  10. Halloween Buffalo Chicken Dip
  11. Crispy Chicken Tenders
