Recipe Details
Prep Time: 20 minutes (plus 1.5 hours rise time)
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 2 hours
Yield: 12 rolls
Ingredients
For the Rolls
1 cup warm whole milk (110 degrees)
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup butter, softened
1 large egg
1 teaspoon salt
For the Cinnamon Honey Butter
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/3 cup honey
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup powdered sugar
Instructions
In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Stir gently and let sit for 5 to 10 minutes until the mixture is bubbly and foamy.
Add the flour, softened butter, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon until a soft dough forms. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead for 5 to 7 minutes until the dough is smooth, soft, and slightly tacky but not sticky.
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Punch down the dough and divide into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball by tucking the edges underneath and rolling gently on the counter. Place the balls in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, leaving a little space between each. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake the rolls for 13 to 15 minutes until the tops are golden brown and the rolls sound hollow when tapped.
While the rolls bake, make the cinnamon honey butter. Beat together the softened butter, honey, cinnamon, and powdered sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
Brush the hot rolls with a little melted butter as soon as they come out of the oven. Serve warm with the cinnamon honey butter on the side.
Kelvin Tips
The dough should be soft and slightly tacky after kneading. If it feels tough or dry, you have added too much flour. Soft dough makes soft rolls, so resist the urge to keep adding flour.
For the best rise, put the covered dough in a warm spot. I like to turn my oven on to 200 degrees for 2 minutes, turn it off, then place the dough inside with the door slightly cracked.
Make the cinnamon honey butter ahead of time. It stores well in the fridge for up to a week. Just bring it to room temperature before serving so it spreads easily.
These rolls freeze perfectly. Cool completely, place in a freezer bag, and freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in a 325-degree oven for 8 to 10 minutes.
